The 11 Very Real Seasons Every New Hampshirite Has Come To Know If this winter is any evidence, we just can't trust mother nature right now. From 70-degrees in January to snow in April, if there's one thing we've come to expect about the weather in New Hampshire it's that we can't expect anything at all. But, what can we expect when it comes to the seasons? Here's a short guide for folks who want to make sure they've got the right clothes at hand for anything Granite State weather might throw at them.
1. Winter
It's unavoidable. Winter is not only coming but a lot of the time in New Hampshire it's already here. We spend a lot of time with cold weather and snow. Winter is a part of life here in the Granite State.
2. Pretend Spring
But so is spring! And sometimes it comes early! Every so often warmer temps roll in sometime in February which means we're outside soaking it up. Because we know what comes next...
3. Second Winter
This is the real winter. The one that hurts just a little bit more because of that nice taste of spring. This is the winter that brings so much snow that we feel we can't go on. But, we do go on because soon we've got...
4. Deception of Spring
We know it's not real. We know it won't last. But it gives us just enough of a respite from a harsh winter to appreciate and remember that there will be warmer days ahead.
5. Winter. Again.
Those warm days might not be directly ahead though. They might be ahead in a few weeks. Because first, we've got to get through winter. Again. This is when snow showers don't quite accumulate, but they sure take the fun out of what should be warm and sunny days.
6. Mud Season
And then, of course, we get to the messiest season of all. This is when we stop getting our car washed because there's no point. Where there's winter, there will eventually be mud. And most of it ends up on our feet, the back of our pant legs and our cars.
7. Real Spring
But, finally, if we give it enough time we do get to spring. And this one lasts! It's green and bright and the weather is exactly what we've been waiting for all these months! Sure, there might be some pollen. And our eyes might itch, but we'll take it if it means the snow is over.
8. Summer
And then, before we know it, summer's here! It's (dare we say) hot out and the trails and lakes that we love are ready for us!
9. First Fall
Eventually the temps dip and we feel the familiar twinge of the first cool breeze. Days are still warm, but you can't mistake that morning chill.
10. Summer Reboot.
Good thing we all know there's at least one more week of summer in store for us! Even after the kids go back to school, we can expect some heat that feels just a little bit like summer is still here. That's when we eat outside and get in those last beach trips.
11. Real Fall
Until, alas, real fall arrives. And with it comes apple cider donuts, pumpkin-flavored everything and the realization that the seasons are a cycle that we just can't stop. And maybe that's why we live here. To enjoy everything the weather has to offer us. We love New Hampshire and if living here means 11 seasons, we'll gladly take them!
Assuming spring does eventually roll around as expected, we're looking forward to the annual lilac festival coming up near the end of May. Check it out here and make sure you keep the weekend open.
